Most of us don't think about our antivirus until something goes wrong. It sits in the system tray, occasionally pops up with an update notification, and otherwise stays out of the way. That low-friction experience is by design — security software is supposed to work in the background without demanding your attention.

But that invisibility cuts both ways. When your protection goes offline, it often goes just as quietly. There's no alarm, no flashing warning light on your desktop. Your computer keeps working normally. The only difference is that the shield is down.

How Antivirus Software Can Fail

Understanding the failure modes helps you know what to look for. Here are the most common reasons real protection disappears:

Expired definitions — Antivirus software works by comparing files against a database of known threats. That database, called virus definitions or signatures, needs to be updated constantly — sometimes multiple times a day. If your definitions are weeks or months out of date, your software can't recognize new threats. It's still running, but it's essentially blind to anything discovered after your last update.

Expired subscriptions — Many commercial antivirus products stop updating definitions (or stop working entirely) when your subscription lapses. The software might still appear to be running, but it's operating on stale information. Disabled Windows services — Antivirus programs depend on background services running in Windows to do their job. Malware that kills security software first — This is the most unsettling scenario. Certain types of malware — particularly ransomware and rootkits — are specifically designed to disable or uninstall security software before carrying out their main attack. It's one of the first things they do after getting onto your system, precisely because it makes everything that follows easier.

How to Actually Verify Your Protection Is Running

Don't just glance at the system tray and assume everything's fine. Here's how to do a real check:

Check Windows Security Center — Windows has a built-in dashboard that monitors your security status. Open it by searching for "Windows Security" in the Start menu. Look at the "Virus & threat protection" section. It should show your antivirus software as active and up to date. If it shows any red or yellow warnings, that's your signal to investigate.

Verify your definitions are current — Inside your antivirus software (whether that's Windows Defender or a third-party product), look for the last update timestamp on your virus definitions. If it's more than a day or two old, something may be preventing updates from coming through.

Check that the service is actually running — Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter. This opens the Windows Services panel. Find the service associated with your antivirus software (for Windows Defender, look for "Windows Defender Antivirus Service"). Its status should say "Running." If it says "Stopped," that's a red flag.

Look for the Action Center notification — Windows will sometimes post a notification in the Action Center (the speech bubble icon near your clock) when it detects that your antivirus is off or outdated. These notifications are easy to dismiss and forget, so it's worth opening the Action Center and actually reading anything in there.

Try the EICAR test file — The EICAR test file is a harmless, standardized file that every reputable antivirus program is designed to flag as a threat. It contains no actual malware — it's just a string of text that triggers antivirus detection by design. You can download it from eicar.org. If your antivirus doesn't react to it, your protection isn't working correctly.

  3. Run Windows Defender's offline scan — this boots into a clean environment before Windows fully loads, making it harder for active malware to hide. Search for "Windows Security," go to "Virus & threat protection," scroll to "Scan options," and select "Microsoft Defender Offline scan."
  4. If a third-party antivirus is the problem, try uninstalling and reinstalling it. Many vendors offer standalone removal tools for exactly this purpose.
  5. Consider a second-opinion scanner — Tools like Malwarebytes Free are designed to be run alongside your main antivirus as a one-time scan. They're useful for catching things your primary software missed.
